A Code of Conduct for Students on the use of AI
Artificial intelligence (AI) tools may be of value to your learning experience when used ethically and responsibly. The following code of conduct aims to highlight ways in which you can use AI tools to supplement your learning while upholding the values of honesty and scholarly integrity.
1. Check AI guidance on your module
Before using any AI tools, you should check whether the use of AI-generated content is allowed in your assignments. In all cases, you should respect the University regulations regarding the use and attribution of AI-generated content.
2. Learn more about the use of AI
AI tools can be useful as aids for learning, by providing ideas, giving overviews of a topic, or helping you study. Learn about how to use these approaches in a way that helps your study, rather than as shortcuts to avoid genuine engagement with the material.
3. Be transparent
Any piece of work for assessment should provide clear attribution to information from other sources including if that information was obtained from AI-generated content. You should cite any AI-generated content just as you would with any other external source.
Citation of AI should acknowledge the AI tool used, the publisher/company that made the AI system (and their URL), and a brief statement setting the context. Some examples are shown below. If necessary, further details may be added (such as prompts used, raw output obtained) to help clarify the information gained and how you used it in your assignment.
Examples: · “I acknowledge the use of ChatGPT 3.5 (Open AI, https://chat.openai.com/) to generate ideas about this topic, from which I selected the topic discussed here”. · “I acknowledge the use of Adobe Firefly (https://www.adobe.com/sensei/generative-ai/firefly.html) to generate images that were the basis of my critical analysis discussed in this assignment.”
4. Maintain academic integrity
Do not use AI tools to plagiarize or produce work that misrepresents your own knowledge and abilities. Respect copyright laws when using AI-generated materials, ensuring proper permissions are granted.
5. Verify information
AI can write plausible sounding information that is incorrect or unsubstantiated. Make sure to double-check facts and information obtained through AI tools before incorporating them in your assignments or projects.
6. Present your own academic voice
If AI tools are used to generate ideas or information, make sure to use that information as any other source, and use your assignment to contribute your own insights and perspectives to your work. This is a valuable way to grow your own expertise in your topic.
7. Keep a log of your learning process as well as assessment product
As AI tools become more mainstream, assessment will likely shift to finding out more about what your thinking and contribution was in the final product submitted for assessment. You should maintain a log of your work done in preparing an assessment, such as a portfolio or ideas list showing the process of how you generated your output over time. Keep a note in this log of the AI tools you've used and the extent of their contribution, and how you've integrated their results into your final assessment product.
8. Make sure that use of AI in any collaboration activities is openly discussed
In activities where group work is present, make sure to encourage open and honest discussions about the ethical use of AI tools among your peers.
