The Employability and Career Development module aims to facilitate business management students to define their career goals and plans and identify personal employability potential through the identification of individual strengths and the areas for future development in the desired career field.

By the end of the module, students will be able to:

1.      Research and critically evaluate the graduate employment market

2.      Identify where their chosen career path lies within the employment market

3.      Synthesize the key skills and knowledge requirements for the chosen career and delineate how they can demonstrate these skills in the work environment

4.      Research and design a series of personal/professional career tools which can be used in business management and relevant management disciplines for the recruitment market.

Lectures and demonstrations will be organised to present the basic concepts and principles of employability.  Seminars and tool-based activities will be used to discuss and explain the implications for practice from specific problem areas in career development. Students will be expected to complement this study with intensive self-directed learning.

The knowledge, therefore, will be mostly applied, designed to acquaint the students with the general entrepreneurial process and strategy, and its importance in society. The students are expected to develop awareness about the practical businesses challenges faced by start-up companies and start developing some basic managerial and creative thinking skills demonstrated in the way business ideas are generated, analysed and marketed. The expected outcome of the module is the development of a mini Business Plan. It is expected that the students will resort to and apply the learnt throughout the modules at Level 1.

The module illustrates and examines these theories through the analysis of strategies employed by companies in the hospitality, tourism, leisure, and events industries. Special attention is given to exploring the various aspects of strategy formulation/analysis and implementation issues. Moreover, the module aims to familiarise students with the theory and practice of strategic management in business organisations. Specifically, it aims to foster a critical understanding of strategic management paradigms and analysis techniques, as well as promoting insight and originality in approaching strategic analysis and implementation.
